During the catagen phase, which lasts about two weeks, the eyelash stops growing and the hair follicle shrinks. Finally, during the telogen phase, which lasts about 100 days, the eyelash falls out and a new one begins to grow.

They also help to lubricate the eyes, by trapping moisture and keeping the eyes from drying out.
